Skin tags are small, smooth growths that hang off the skin’s surface. They are usually the same as the natural colouring of the affected person’s skin, but they can vary in size. Typical places for a skin tag to appear can include: the neck, under the breasts, groin, armpits or eyelids – places where there is a fold in the skin.
A skin tag isn’t usually found to be harmful, but for many, it’s the appearance that causes concern and because they can catch on jewellery or clothing.
Both men and women can develop a skin tag. It is made up of blood vessels and collagen fibers, covered in skin. Skin tags may appear for no apparent reason, but they are found to occur more frequently in those who are overweight or with older adults. The reason they tend to appear in folds of skin is because the skin rubs together in these places. Due to hormonal changes, pregnant women will often develop a skin tag.
When a skin tag snags on clothing, it can be uncomfortable or may even bleed.
In some cases a skin tag may fall off on its own, when the inner fibers have become twisted and the blood supply has been cut off. However, for most people having a skin tag removed by a medical professional may be necessary.
