WHAT ARE SKIN VEINS?

Thread veins, also known as spider veins or venous flares, are common examples of skin veins. It is thought that up to 80% of adults can be affected by skin veins, which appear as thin, red or purple strands that are visible from just beneath the surface of the skin.

This concern can develop on the legs, feet and on the face (usually in cases where a person is affected by Rosacea), with the threads appearing singularly or as part of a cluster.

Skin veins are not often harmful, but their presentation can produce an uneven skin tone that is unwelcome.

WHAT CAUSES SKIN VEINS?

Common causes of this concern can include stress or trauma to the skin, and exposure to the sun. This can put pressure on the blood vessels that are located beneath the surface of the skin, which as a result, can burst or become damaged. The flow of blood will then change direction, finding an alternative route from the impaired vessel.

Other factors that can be considered as possible causes for skin veins can include: inflammation, hormonal changes, long periods of sitting or standing, pregnancy and injury to the skin.
