A jawline that is noticeably square, or enlarged, is often what determines the appearance of a wide jaw. This characteristic is often thought of as more of a masculine feature, due to its strength and dominant appearance. Having said this, both men and women can feel concerned by a wide jaw when it affects the proportions of the face. A woman can often feel that a more slender facial profile is more desirable and feminine-looking, whereas a man may feel their jawline draws attention away from the rest of their features.
A wide jaw may be congenital (present from birth), through the influence of inherited genes. The development of the jawbone will naturally have grown in this way, and will resemble the appearance of a person’s parent(s).
When a wide jaw develops throughout a person’s life, the most probable cause will be due to the overgrowth of the muscles around the jaw. The masseter muscles are situated on either side of the jaw, and are responsible for its movement. They can become enlarged through excessive use; if a person regularly chews, grinds their teeth or clenches their jaw, causing the muscle to grow.
The likely cause of a wide jaw will determine the way in which The Facebible will intend to approach the concern.
Dermal fillers are used within this treatment to alter the shape of the bone structure, using cleverly placed injections to add volume at just the right places. This can give the illusion of a more streamlined structure that takes away the emphasis of the square shape of a wide jaw.
If enlarged masseter muscles are the contributing factor, and have overgrown through excessive use, botulinum toxin may provide an effective solution. Designed to prevent the nerves from sending messages to the muscles, this treatment can help to prevent involuntary movements of the jaw, and its growth. Improving the appearance of the jaw can be performed on its own or as part of an overall ‘profile balancing’ plan.
